Cortisol awakening response

The cortisol awakening response is the normal rise in cortisol over roughly the first 30 to 45 minutes after you wake up. It is part of how the body switches the day on, and it happens whatever time you wake.

Cortisol awakening response is also called CAR or morning cortisol rise.

Cortisol already follows a daily curve before you open your eyes. It sits at its lowest around the middle of the night, starts climbing in the hours before your usual wake time, and is on the way up by the time an alarm goes off. The awakening response is the extra jump on top of that, triggered by waking itself: a rise across the first half hour or so, then a decline through the rest of the morning.

It is a normal feature of healthy waking rather than a stress event, and the name misleads people on that point. Cortisol has a reputation problem. In this context it is doing routine work, mobilising energy and shifting the body from the metabolic state of sleep into the metabolic state of the day, which is much the same job your circadian rhythm has been preparing for since the small hours.

How it relates to feeling awake

The response and sleep inertia overlap in time but are not the same thing. Inertia is about the brain coming back online, and it is felt most sharply when you wake out of deep sleep. The cortisol rise is a hormonal signal that runs on its own schedule regardless of which stage the alarm caught. So you can be fully in the middle of a normal awakening response and still feel like a wreck, which is worth knowing before you decide something is wrong with you.

Measuring it takes several saliva samples at fixed intervals after waking, under controlled conditions. No phone, watch or ring measures cortisol, and any product suggesting otherwise is overselling. It is also not a number to optimise. Research on it is mostly about groups, not individuals, and reading anything about your own health into a single morning is not something the science supports.

What you can act on is the rest of the morning: light, movement and not restarting the night with the snooze button.
