Sleep cycle
What one full cycle contains, why the early ones and the late ones are not the same shape, and why 90 minutes is an average rather than a measurement.
In short
A sleep cycle is one pass down through light and deep sleep and back up into REM. It averages about 90 minutes, real ones run roughly 70 to 120, and you complete four to six of them in a normal night.
Sleep cycle is also called ultradian sleep cycle or sleep stage cycle.
A cycle is one complete pass through the stages: down from wakefulness into light NREM sleep, further down into slow wave deep sleep, back up through the lighter stages, and out into REM before the next descent begins. Ninety minutes is the number everybody quotes because it sits near the middle of the distribution, and the distribution is wide: roughly seventy to a hundred and twenty minutes depending on the person and on where in the night you are looking.
The detail that matters, and the one most explanations leave out, is that the cycles are not interchangeable. The composition shifts across the night. Early cycles carry most of your slow wave sleep and almost no REM. By the final third the deep sleep has largely been spent and the REM periods have stretched, which is why the dreams you actually remember are the ones nearest your alarm, and why an early night and a lie-in are not the same sleep even when they are the same number of hours.
Why the average is the whole problem
Counting whole cycles is how every bedtime calculator works, including ours. It is a reasonable method and it inherits one weakness: the arithmetic assumes a fixed cycle length that nobody actually has. Set an alarm five cycles after lights out and you are betting that your cycles ran to the mean, that you fell asleep when you thought you did, and that nothing broke the night.
That is why the last half hour before an alarm is a coin toss no calculator can settle, and it is the reason smart wake exists. Watching the thirty minutes before your set time for a lighter moment and ringing on it does not need to know your cycle length, because it is observing rather than predicting. Your set time stays as the fallback.
