Sleep spindle
The short bursts of fast brain activity that define stage N2, what researchers think they do, and why no phone or watch can ever see one.
In short
A sleep spindle is a short burst of fast brain activity, usually about half a second to three seconds long, that appears in stage N2. Spindles are one of the markers used to score N2, and they are linked to memory consolidation.
Sleep spindle is also called sleep spindle activity or sigma waves.
Named for how they look rather than what they do, spindles appear on an EEG trace as a brief run of waves that swells and fades, wider in the middle than at either end. They sit in the sigma band, roughly 11 to 16 cycles per second, and they arise from a loop between the thalamus and the cortex rather than from anything happening in the room.
Along with the K complex, the spindle is one of the two features that let a scorer say a given epoch is N2 rather than N1. Since N2 is the largest single share of an adult night, that makes spindles the most common landmark in NREM sleep. They thin out as the night moves into deep sleep, where the slow delta waves take over, and they are absent from REM.
Why researchers care about them
Two threads run through the work on spindles. The first is memory: spindle activity is broadly associated with consolidating what you learned during the day, which is one reason a night after heavy learning is not interchangeable with any other night. The second is protection. Spindles appear to play a part in keeping outside noise from pulling you back to the surface, which fits the everyday observation that some people sleep through a street and some do not.
None of this is something you can act on directly. There is no technique for producing more spindles on demand, and no consumer device counts them. That is the practical point worth taking away: a spindle is only visible with electrodes on the scalp, so it belongs to polysomnography and nowhere else.
