Time in bed (TIB)

Time in bed is the denominator behind every sleep percentage, and stretching it to catch up on sleep usually makes the numbers look worse, not better.

Time in bed, or TIB, is the whole window from lights out to getting up, awake minutes included. It is the denominator of sleep efficiency, so widening it to chase more sleep usually lowers the percentage instead.

Time in bed (TIB) is also called TIB or time spent in bed.

Time in bed is the least interesting number on a sleep report and the one that quietly controls the rest of them. It runs from lights out to the moment you get up, awake minutes included, and every sleep percentage is divided by it.

The worked night again: eight hours in bed, 480 minutes. Twenty of them go to sleep latency, 25 to wake after sleep onset, 15 to lying awake before you get up. Sixty minutes gone, 420 minutes of total sleep time, and 420 over 480 is roughly 88% sleep efficiency. Four terms, one piece of arithmetic, seen from four sides.

Why more time in bed is not more sleep

Sleep is not evenly available across the clock. Add an hour at the front, before your body clock has released you into it, and most of that hour turns into latency. Add it at the back, past your natural wake time, and you get light fragmented sleep and more awake minutes. Either way total sleep time rises far less than time in bed does, so efficiency falls. Someone answering a bad week by going to bed at 21:30 usually ends up with a worse looking report and barely any extra sleep.

The clinical version runs the other way. In treatment for chronic insomnia, a clinician may deliberately shrink someone’s time in bed to concentrate sleep and rebuild the association between the bed and sleeping, then widen it again as efficiency recovers. It has a real track record, it is uncomfortable while it happens, and it is not a thing to improvise alone. That one is a conversation with a doctor or a sleep therapist.

For tracking, the practical point is that a phone has to guess your window from when the night started and stopped rather than from when you were genuinely lying down, so your reported time in bed and your real one can differ by a few minutes at each end.
