Wake times

If your alarm is set for 5:00am, when should you go to bed?

More people set a 5am alarm than actually keep one, and the reason is almost never discipline. It is that they moved the wake time and left the bedtime alone, so week two runs on six hours and week three quietly returns to seven.

In short

To wake up at 5:00am feeling like you finished a cycle rather than got cut off inside one, go to bed at 9:15pm. That is 7h 30m of sleep across 5 full cycles, plus the fifteen minutes it takes most people to drop off. If you can get to bed at 7:45pm you get 9h, and 10:45pm still leaves you 6h.

The 5am club has a bedtime problem, not a willpower problem

Five in the morning is the most aspirational alarm on the clock. It shows up in productivity books, in gym schedules and in every January resolution thread. What those sources rarely lead with is the corresponding bedtime, which for a full eight hours is a quarter to ten, and for nine hours is a quarter to eight.

If you can get to bed at 9:45pm, a 5am start is genuinely sustainable and a lot of people find the first two hours of the day are the only uninterrupted ones they get. If your evening reliably ends at midnight, a 5am alarm is not an early start, it is a five hour night with better branding.

  • Six cycles: bed at 7:45pm
  • Five cycles: bed at 9:15pm, and this is the one most people can actually hold
  • Four cycles: bed at 10:45pm, which is six and a quarter hours and a short-term arrangement at best

Move in fifteen minute steps, not in one jump

Going from a 7am alarm to a 5am alarm overnight fails for almost everyone, because your body clock does not move two hours because your calendar did. Shift the wake time by fifteen minutes at a time and hold each step for four or five days before the next one.

The wake time is the anchor, not the bedtime. Get up at the new time even on the mornings it feels wrong, and let sleep pressure pull the bedtime earlier on its own. Trying to force sleep at an hour your body is not ready for is the fastest route to lying in the dark doing arithmetic.

If you are a genuinely late chronotype, this is harder and slower for you than the advice implies, and the honest ceiling might be 6am rather than 5am.

The table is an average, and your night is not

Ninety minutes is the number everyone quotes because it is the mean. In a real night your first cycle tends to run short, the middle ones stretch, and by the last hour before 5:00amyou are cycling faster and spending more of it in light sleep and REM. So the table gets you to roughly the right bedtime, and then the last half hour is a coin toss.

That last half hour is the entire argument for a smart alarm. Tock watches the thirty minutes before 5:00am on two channels, movement from the accelerometer and sound from the microphone, and rings a little early if it finds a lighter moment. If it does not find one,5:00am rings exactly as you set it. Questions people ask

What time should I go to bed to wake up at 5am?

For five sleep cycles, about seven and three quarter hours end to end, go to bed at 9:15pm. For six cycles go at 7:45pm. Both figures include roughly fifteen minutes to actually fall asleep, which most bedtime calculators forget.

Is waking up at 5am healthy?

It is fine if the sleep in front of it is fine. There is nothing special about the hour, and no evidence that early risers are healthier once you account for how much sleep they get. What does show up consistently is that a regular wake time beats an early one.

How long does it take to get used to waking up at 5am?

If you move in fifteen minute steps, two to four weeks from a 7am start. If you jump straight there, you will feel adjusted for about three days and then hit a wall, because you have been running a sleep debt rather than shifting a rhythm.

Should I nap if I wake up at 5am?

A twenty minute nap in the early afternoon works well on this schedule and will not wreck your night. Keep it before about 3pm and keep it short, because anything past thirty minutes risks waking you out of deep sleep and leaving you worse off than before.

An alarm at 5:00am does not have to feel like 5:00am

Tock watches the half hour before your alarm and rings a little early if it finds a lighter moment. Your set time is always the fallback, so you are never late.
