Light sleep

What N1 and N2 actually are, why light sleep is not wasted sleep, and why it is the stage a smart alarm is looking for in the half hour before you wake.

In short

Light sleep is stages N1 and N2, the shallower part of non-REM sleep. It makes up roughly half of a typical night, it is where sleep spindles occur, and it is the easiest stage to be woken from without grogginess.

Light sleep is also called N1 and N2 or stage 1 and stage 2 sleep.

Light sleep covers the first two stages of non-REM: N1, the brief transitional stage as you drop off, and N2, which is where most of it lives. Together they account for around half of a typical adult night, which routinely alarms people looking at a sleep tracker for the first time, because the label sounds like a failure state.

It is not. N2 is where sleep spindles occur, and those bursts of activity are associated with memory consolidation and with keeping you asleep through minor disturbances. A night without a substantial light sleep component would not be a better night, it would be an abnormal one. The proportions are a description of healthy sleep architecture rather than a scoreboard.

Why an alarm cares about it

Light sleep is the stage you can be woken from with the least cost. Sleep inertia, the fogged and slowed state after waking, is at its worst coming out of slow wave deep sleep and at its mildest coming out of N1 or N2. Same amount of sleep, very different morning, decided entirely by where the alarm landed.

That is the entire premise of smart wake. Tock spends the thirty minutes before your set alarm watching two channels, movement from the accelerometer and sound from the microphone, for the signature of a lighter moment, and rings when it finds one. If it does not find one, your set time rings exactly as you left it, so the fallback is never worse than an ordinary alarm.

A note on what the chart is

On a phone-only night the stages you see are estimates rather than measurements. A microphone and an accelerometer can infer a great deal about movement and breathing and cannot do what electrodes do. Tock says so in the app rather than only here, and what estimated sleep stages really mean sets out where the line is.

Questions people ask

Is light sleep good or bad?

Neither. It is a normal and necessary part of sleep architecture that makes up about half of a healthy night, and sleep spindles occurring in N2 are associated with memory consolidation. Treating a high light sleep figure as a failure is a misreading of the chart.

How much light sleep should you get?

Roughly half a night is typical for an adult, though the useful framing is that this is a description rather than a target. There is no action you can take to convert light sleep into deep sleep, and total sleep and regularity are the things worth influencing.
